5 Things to Expect the First Time You Get Botox

Are you thinking of trying Botox? Good for you! You’re not alone. Botox is one of the most commonly-used anti-ageing procedures worldwide, and more people are using it every single year. But Botox, like any other non-surgical treatment, is often met with scrutiny by those who haven’t tried it. You name it, we’ve heard it here at The Attic Spa.

“You won’t be able to frown!” some say.

“You’ll lose all feeling in your face!”

“Your forehead will end up frozen!”

If you’ve ever had similar doubts about this treatment, then it’s time to put those fears to rest. For anyone who is interested in trying out Botox, it’s good to know what to expect. We’ve put together a few pointers before you get booked in.

1. When administered properly, Botox produces natural results, not miracle cures.

The number one thing that we tell everyone that steps into our salon is that fillers of any kind should not be noticeable. Botox, or Botulinum Toxin type A, is a purified derivative of the botulinum protein. This protein is most commonly injected into forehead lines or crow’s feet that commonly appear as we start to age. Through various tiny needles, Botox targets the face muscles to temporarily relax them, meaning that the lines in your face soften and ageing processes reverse in a subtle way.

Botox should never ever make you look emotionless or ‘frozen’. Because the needles only relax the muscles that they’re injected into, an experienced practitioner will be able to target the correct points on your face so that you can always come away looking refreshed and natural with minimal pain.

2. It might pinch, but not as much as you’d expect.

A Botox treatment consists of a few small injections around the face. Some of these you’ll barely notice; some might make your eyes water. Everyone has different pain tolerances, but because each injection is over so quickly it’s definitely not a treatment that will make you scream and squirm! The whole procedure only takes a few moments, and any redness, swelling or bruising should disappear very quickly. Many of our customers head straight back to work afterwards and no one can tell!

3. Buy cheap, buy twice.

So many people choose to go for cheaper injections, but if your treatment seems too good to be true, then it probably is! Any procedure should be carried out by a registered Independent Nurse Prescriber – someone highly trained and qualified in advanced non-surgical cosmetics. Read up on your chosen injector before you book yourself in. Ask around your area, see what other people are saying and even go and meet with people who have been treated if you can. If your chosen nurse isn’t able to show you their qualifications and provide you with a full consultation beforehand to ensure that you’re both on the same page, then don’t let them anywhere near your face!

4. Your injections take a few days to show results.

Many people assume that Botox is in instant lift, but this actually isn’t the case. A typical Botox procedure will only start to show results in 3-4 days, with the full effect most visible after two weeks. This is because the body takes time to start reacting to the botulinum toxin, and so it’s always a good idea to pop back to see your practitioner after a fortnight so that they can check on progress. If it’s your first time getting Botox, then you should be given a smaller number of units to assess how your muscles respond to the treatment. Your dosage can then be topped up if necessary in any follow-up appointments.

And don’t forget that whilst extremely effective, Botox is still a temporary solution. As with most non-surgical treatments, as time goes on your muscle action will return so that lines start to come back. This tends to take about three to six months, depending on which areas you’ve had treated and how many units have been injected. Results last longer after a few sessions because the skin is able to regenerate the collagen it needs to fill any lines or wrinkles.

5. You won’t be able to stop staring at your face after you’ve had it.

Trust us on this one. As soon as you see how firm and smooth your face is looking a fortnight after your treatment, you won’t want to look away!
