Hi everyone! It’s Mandy here – director and owner of The Attic Spa. Today I thought I’d put pen to paper and address some of the common questions that myself and other healthcare experts face in the aesthetics industry. Why? Over my 37 years of nursing, I’ve had plenty of queries pop into my inbox! Questions about treatments, the safety of non-surgical procedures, as well as the services we offer here at The Attic Spa and what makes us different to day spas. Some are easy to answer; others take time, and after nearly four decades it’s obvious which ones crop up time and time again. With this in mind, I thought it was time to shed some light on the frequently asked questions in the medi-spa industry, so that you can make informed decisions on cosmetic procedures and finding the right healthcare professional for you.
First things first – Question 1. What is a medi-spa?
If you’ve ever booked onto a spa day, you’ll notice that there are different types of spas you can visit – day spas and medi-spas. A medi-spa differs from a day spa in that we can offer medical treatments alongside your traditional ‘spa’ services such as massage therapy and facials. Here at The Attic Spa, we provide the best of both worlds: professional, medical non-surgical procedures delivered in a therapeutic, spa-like environment. When I first set up in Grimsby, I wanted to bring the professionalism of a doctor’s surgery to the tranquility of a spa. You can visit us for a day of pampering in our Moroccan Room, pop in for an hour for a massage, or step into my clinic for a non-surgical treatment! The choice is yours.
Question 2. Have you got a medical or nursing background?
Yes. I’ve been a qualified nurse for 37 years and have been qualified in aesthetics for the past 13 years. Of course, having a certificate isn’t everything: you have to continue learning within this industry. I have had the privilege of being trained by Allergan and some of the best aesthetic doctors and nurses in the world. I’m regularly travelling across the UK to stay up-to-date on new techniques, products and procedures. All my certificates are also available to view in the clinic should you wish.
Question 3. Are you mobile?
No, I am not. I own, run and work full-time from my specialised clinic and medi-spa. We are one of the longest established clinics in the Grimsby area, and having a permanent base allows me to service my patients in a familiar, professional environment.
Question 4. Can I get Botox or dermal fillers during my first appointment?
No, you can’t, and please don’t ever let anyone near you with a needle without having a face-to-face consultation first! Botox is a POM (prescription-only medicine), and by law you have to have a full consultation with a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber before you are treated. We then order a prescription for Botox in your name from the pharmacy. This also applies to Hyalase – an enzyme used to dissolve lip filler complications. Legally we can perform dermal filler procedures on the day, but always recommend a consultation to give you time to think about the procedure and consider what your options are. Of course, many of our patients come and visit us regularly. Once this is the case and you’re an established customer at the clinic, I would be able to perform your procedure on the day of your appointment.
Question 5. Are you insured?
Yes, we are fully insured. Each non-surgical aesthetic treatment we offer here at the clinic is specifically named on our insurance policy and also the names of the practitioners who work at The Attic Spa.
Question 6. Are you regulated?
Yes we are, we are regulated by and accountable to the NMC (National Midwifery Council) and also due to a number of non-surgical aesthetic services we offer we are registered with and inspected by Save Face – a national register of Accredited practitioners who provide these cosmetic treatments. Question 7. Are you always available to contact?
In an emergency a member of the clinic would be available 24/7. In a non-emergency we would always endeavour to reply as soon as is physically possible by phone, text message or email. We are also active on social media so you could also get in touch via our Facebook page.
Question 8. How experienced are you?
I love this question! Very experienced. I’ve worked full-time in aesthetics for 13 years now, and in that time have performed thousands of treatments and procedures in the medi-spa. Over the years there really isn’t much I haven’t seen, including complications and patients who come from over less-qualified practitioners with problems. I know the risks and can sit down and run through every single question you may have on any service we offer.
Question 9. Where can I find your reviews?
The Attic Spa has over 200 reviews on Facebook with an average of 4.9 out of 5 stars, so head to our page and take a look! Many of these are directly related to Botox and filler treatments, but I can also provide you with a list of customers who would be happy to answer questions about their own experiences.
Question 10. Which products do you use and where do you get them from?
Using licensed, tested products is an absolute MUST within our industry, which is why I only use FDA-approved products purchased from official pharmacies or recognised manufacturer outlets. It’s all too easy to get your hands on filler these days for a fraction of the cost, but it’s often unlicensed and not what it claims to be. Our prices might be steeper than some of the newer clinics in the area, but this is cover all our costs and ensure we always have full clinical support from the pharmaceutical company, manufacturer or official UK importer. This is imperative to patient safety – which I believe you can’t put a price on!
